These programs brought to you by

Austin Community College launched the health professions area in April of 2000 to provide training for individuals beginning their career in the industry and also to provide development opportunities for current professionals. Today, we offer a wide range of entry-level and continuing education programs for nurses, emergency medical personnel, long-term care administrators, dental professionals, licensed chemical dependency counselors and other important healthcare professionals.

Important Student Information

As of September 1, 2015, all students wanting to apply to a Health Profession Program should start their application by uploading their immunization record to Castle Branch (formerly Certified Profile). Use Package Code UL64im.

Immunizations and other documentation will be required prior to applications being accepted into Health Care Program. Please see program specific application for instructions.

Dental Science

A career in the field of dentistry is both stable and rewarding. Our programs will prepare you to become a Certified Dental Assistant and enable you to quickly enter this rapidly growing profession.

Career Pathways:


Coursework includes:

  • Clinical Observations
  • Group Clinicals
  • Preceptorships
  • Preparation for TX State registration in dental radiology

Long-Term Care

This program prepares participants to operate effectively in the long-term care environment and for certification through the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP), the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS), or the Consortium of Therapeutic Recreation/Activities Certification, Inc.

Program includes studies in:

  • Communications
  • Volunteer Management
  • Advocacy
  • Ethics


This program will prepare you to take the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) exam for licensure as a massage therapist in the State of Texas. You can also choose complementary coursework in laser aesthetics.

Career Pathways:


You will become qualified to:

  • Assess soft tissue condition
  • Improve range of motion
  • Propose treatment plans
  • Use multiple therapeutic tools

Medical Assistant

Medical Assistants are trained to perform a variety of skilled clinical and administrative tasks. Choose a program that leads to certification as a Registered Medical Assistant or from among the alternative clinical and administrative pathways available.

Career Pathways:

Medical Assistant

Key program notes include:

  • 720 hours of coursework
  • Full-time or Part-time options
  • Classroom, clinical, and hands-on experience
  • Prep for the National Medical Assistant exam


The pathway for this profession includes several building blocks. Choose an entry-level track, a career as a registered nurse, or from among many continuing education options to further your current professional pursuits.

Vision Care

This program provides a career pathway into the ophthalmology field and prepares students to join a team of sophisticated specialists who are trained to handle the intricacies of the human eye as well as the challenges eyesight problems often bring.

Career Pathways:

Vision Care

This certification track includes:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of eye disease
  • Fitting and dispensing contact lenses and eyeglasses
  • Procedures for managing the entire medical practice

Vet Assistant

Graduates of this program become a Certified Veterinary Assistant.

Career Pathways:


This program includes:

  • Front and back office skills
  • Animal management techniques
  • Preparation to assist with surgical procedures
