Students will learn to use community resources to analyze personal career interests, values, skills and aptitudes, surveying and researching jobs with related educational requirements. Facilitating the use of public transportation enhances opportunities for independent living and competitive, community-based employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Learning to independently use public transportation increases access to autonomous activities, such as opportunities to work and to attend post-secondary education programs on large college campuses. Students will be taught to read Bus Maps/Routes, use GPS-based applications, and access public transportation (Bus, Light Rail, walking, etc.).
This course contains adaptive lessons designed to teach individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities skills in Inclusive and Accessible Healthy Relationship and Safer Sexuality Curriculum for Young Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. The class is individualized to meet a student’s needs and goals.
The use of specialized software and use of adaptive hardware is included in this class. Vocational technology use includes keyboard use, data entry, and transcription accuracy. System and application software skills appropriate for each student are selected during the admissions interview. Introduction to nutrients and the role of good food in growth and development, as well as, in the maintenance of health. Students will begin to learn the difference between food that makes you feel better and food that can make you feel worse, how to choose better options, and what to look for when looking at food labels.
Students are taught in a layered curriculum to enhance reading, writing and mathematics. Instruction is planned to build vocational and independent living skills in reading, writing and mathematics. An introduction to stress defusing interventions. Topics include types of stress, the effects of stress on the body (mind, body) and different stress management strategies. Students will identify stressors in their environment, interventions that they may be interested in using, and tips for remembering to use their stress techniques.
