Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence

Course Code: BMGT-2031

Course Description

This 48-hour course prepares students for the American Society for Quality (ASQ) "Certified Manager of Quality / Organizational Excellence" certification (CMQ/OE). This certification was previously known as "Certified Quality Manager" (CQM). The course is a refresher study of the Body of Knowledge for the CMQ/OE which prepares students to successfully pass the certification exam administered by ASQ. The Certified Manager of Quality is qualified to facilitate and lead team efforts to establish and monitor customer/supplier relations, support strategic planning and deployment initiatives, and help develop measurement systems to determine organizational improvement. He/she should also be able to motivate and evaluate staff, manage projects and human resources, analyze financial situations, determine and evaluate risk and associated responses, and employ knowledge management tools and techniques in resolving organizational challenges. Course topics include Leadership topics (organizational structures and challenges, leadership challenges, teams and team processes, and ethics), Strategic Plan Development and Deployment (planning models, business environment, strategic plan deployment), Management Elements and Methods (management skills, communication skills, project management, quality systems, quality models and theories), Quality Management Tools (problem solving tools, process management, measurement assessment and metrics), Customer-Focused Organizations (customer identification/segmentation, customer relationships), Supply Chain Management (supplier selection, supplier communications, supplier performance, supplier improvement, supplier certification, supplier logistics), Training and Development (training plans, needs analysis, training materials and curricula, training effectiveness). Since the certification exam requires responses to two constructed response (essay) questions, this course includes specific training on answering these questions covering the above topics. See the ASQ website, www.asq.org, for information about prerequisites to apply for the examination and details about the examination, the body of knowledge, and other aspects of this certification.
