Basic Leather Construction
Working leather was a valuable skill on the Texas frontier, and you can learn about leather types, how to cut and sew simple leather items in this beginner class. This four-hour, hands-on class gives you the basics, and our leatherworker will show you several techniques to hone your skills.

Botanical Printmaking
This one day workshop guides students in the creation of an original botanical lino-cut print. Students will start the day on the Elgin campus farm identifying and photographing botanical structures and plants, then move into the classroom to learn the process of linoleum printmaking. Students will leave with one-of-a-kind original prints.

Candlemaking
Learn how to make candles from paraffin and beeswax, to create both decorative and useful tapers for your home. Learn the basic techniques in an afternoon, with ample dipping opportunities so you can make your own for the holidays. Taught by our candle experts. Crochet Basics
Used by the pioneers to create a wide variety of goods, crochet is one of the basic crafts that will start you creating wonderful projects. Students will learn the basic stitches and terminology, and will leave the class with a completed pillow top. Materials are included.

Flintknapping
A beginners guide to the art of working stone, from flaking to shaping and arrowheads to gun flints. This is ancient skill that dates back hundreds of thousands of years, and was used in frontier Texas by the Native Texans and the settlers. A taste of cutting stone, taught at a Native Texan site. Students must bring gloves and protective eyewear.

Floral Painting Workshop
Students will meet at the elgin campus farm to gain insight into floral types, growth and structures. Afterwards, they will be guided through a step-by-step process to create their own original acrylic floral painting.

Hand-Tool Woodworking
Learn the basics of working wood the old-fashioned way. By hand. A short course in the types of hand tools that were used to work with wood in the 1800s, the proper ways to use them and the way to keep them sharp. A fascinating afternoon of hands-on history. Class meets in an historic wood shop. This is a hands-on and demonstration class.

Turkish Marbling Art (EBRU) I
This course is an introduction to water marbling (Ebru). Ebru is a traditional Turkish paper art water marbling art where the canvas is the surface of the water and the images are then transferred to paper.
