Course Description

This course covers fundamentals of shop skills used in agricultural processes applicable towards maintenance and repair of farm facilities and equipment. Topics include arc welding, oxyacetylene cutting and welding, drawing and planning projects, tool maintenance, metal working, woodworking, plumbing and concrete. Upon completion, students should be able to answer theoretical questions on topics covered and assist with maintenance and repair of farm facilities and equipment.

Meet The Instructor

Vivian K. Smotherman

Vivian Smotherman is a Navy veteran who learned her skills with machines serving onboard war ships during the first gulf war. Later she took this training into the offshore oil fields where she has spent the last 20 years working around the world on some of the biggest and most advanced construction technology in the industry. From heavy lift cranes capable of lifting hundreds of tons to deep sea working remotely operated vehicles (WROV’s) her broad range of skills and unparalleled depth of knowledge have propelled her to the top of her field.

During this time Vivian also started Eden’s Cove Farm in Cedar Creek, TX. Through trial and error this little endeavor has begun to take shape and today, ten years later, it’s safe to call it a farm. Her experience with equipment and machines has served her and the community well.

In 2015 she formed the non-profit organization known as Farm-1-1 to offer her skills to local farmers to help them acquire, share, and maintain their farm equipment in an effort to make farming a little less risky for new and beginning farmers.

Vivian has verifiable expertise in hydraulics, mechanics, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic systems.
