Public Speaking is the application of communication theory and practice within the public speaking context. Emphasis is placed on speaking publicly without stress, audience analysis, speaker delivery, ethics of communication, cultural diversity, and speech organizational techniques in order to develop students' speaking abilities, as well as the ability to effectively evaluate oral presentations. Additional emphasis placed on the use of verbal and non-verbal skills to make points clear and effective.
A physical conditioning course that emphasizes cardiovascular fitness through your choice of walking, jogging, or a combination of both. Students will not be required to run. Correct techniques in striding and form will be introduced in addition to discussion of the benefits of aerobic exercise, nutrition, weight management, and associated topics. Led by Rick Roemer, this 8-week course is designed for those who have taken Acting Fundamentals and Acting Explorations or equivalent training. Using scenes or monologues, the focus will be on strengthening text analysis and following inner impulses to create a powerful need to speak. The work in class will enliven the imagination and increase emotional availability and vulnerability of the actor. This class can be taken more than once, as it is different each time with new students and new scenes to explore. After expanding abilities in a playful environment, this class culminates in an event where scenes are performed for a small audience.
Tap into your creative side and discover how fun and easy it is to construct beautiful works of art with mosaics. Students will learn the basics of glass mosaics including cutting, layout/design, affixing the materials, grouting, and finishing in this introductory hands-on class. Each student will complete one project. No previous experience is required. All tools, materials, and necessary equipment will be provided.
An introduction to the family as a dynamic system focusing on the effects of addiction pertaining to family roles, rules, and behavior patterns. Discuss the impact of mood altering substances and behaviors and therapeutic alternatives as they relate to the family from a multicultural and transgenerational perspective. Introduction to Laban Movement Analysis is a LABAN/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies endorsed introductory course. After successful completion of this course, students will receive a certification through LIMS. Introduction to the major themes of Laban Movement Analysis, through theoretical and experiential hands-on work. This course will be taught in person. Instructor email is ellen.bartel@austincc.edu.
