A physical conditioning course that emphasizes cardiovascular fitness through your choice of walking, jogging, or a combination of both. Students will not be required to run. Correct techniques in striding and form will be introduced in addition to discussion of the benefits of aerobic exercise, nutrition, weight management, and associated topics. Strategies for Today's Jobs offers personalized job coaching and guidance for a successful job search to increase your chance of getting hired. Classes are designed for participants with a wide range of backgrounds and goals, from new job seekers to those with extensive career histories. The course offering includes guidance through all stages of the job search-from finding a job to negotiating a salary-and participants will gain access to JobScan, YouScience, BigInterview, and Handshake. This course is open to students, staff, alumni, and community members. There is no tuition associated with this course.
Concepts and skills of leadership in the work setting. Introduces leadership and motivational theories and leadership styles. Includes evaluation of leadership performance. Explore how leaders use power and influence to achieve organizational commitment and effectiveness. Discuss topics of organizational culture, business ethics, and effective goal setting and planning. Identify case studies about the global economy and current events for developing personal leadership skills.
Instruction in the identification and use of native plant species of the Edwards Plateau and Llano Uplift. Basic plant knowledge is helpful, but not required. Much of the class will take place on field study trips for plant identification purposes.
Focuses on aspects of substance abuse prevention from a public health model. Topics include the history of prevention, risk and protective factors among youth, community-based prevention strategies, program design and evaluation, and resources for prevention planning. Integrated with credit DAAC-2306. Qualifies for student health insurance.
This ensemble introduces students to the techniques and rhythms of Afro-Cuban folkloric and popular music. This music, born of African slaves transplanted to Cuba in the 17th and 18th centuries, is rich in West African history and culture. The rumba family of folkloric styles includes yambu, rumba Columbia, and guaguanco and can be traced directly to the Yoruba people in Nigeria. These traditional styles, in addition to the popular cha-cha-cha, mambo, and the mozambique are performed by the ensemble.
