Have An Eye For Design or Decorating?

ACC's Interior Design and Decorating programs offer courses that focus on the fundamental principles of design and decorating. Our courses are designed to provide the basic skills to anyone interested in the Interior Design or Decorating field. Our Certificates are Continuing Education (non-credit) programs.

The Interior Design and Decorating program certificate and courses are currently unavailable. Please keep checking the program page for the most up to date information.

Your Building Blocks to Success

Interior Design - Interior Design is all about how we experience spaces. It's a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. The Interior Design Certificate introduces the fundamental principles of design that include spaces, circulations and functionality.

Interior Decorating - Interior decorating "dresses" an existing space. It begins with a broad concept, such as modern, retro or traditional aesthetics, and works in the details of that style. An interior decorator typically stays with one design style from start to finish to create continuity in a space, and then adds the color selection, textures and patterns to be consistent with the overall style concept. Redecorating a room or updating an outdated style falls under the heading of interior decorating.

The Interior Decorating Certification introduces the staging and styling of furnishings and adorning each space with decorative aesthetic elements to achieve a certain style or theme.

Important Notices: Interior Design classes may be delivered synchronously via an online format. Students will need access to an Internet connected computer, and have basic computer skills. Click on individual course titles below for detailed information.

The Interior Design classes alone will not qualify you to sit for the NCIDQ examination or to be licensed in Texas as a "Registered Interior Designer". Please visit the NCIDQ web site for more information. However, our Certificates will enable you to work in the Home decorating industry or start your own business.

Students must contact the Program Coordinator to request their final Interior Certificates once they have completed all classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

? How long does it take to complete the program?

Certificate programs are self-paced, but typically take 12 months to complete based upon 2-3 class load per semester.

Please note: Not all classes may not be offered every semester.

? Do I have to take the classes in any specific order?

You may take the courses in any order, however, Technical Drawing is recommended before Fundamentals of Interior Design.

We recommend the following course order:

  1. History of Interior Design
  2. Textiles
  3. Interior design building systems
  4. Technical Drawing
  5. Fundamentals
  6. Professional Practices and Communications

NOTICE: This is a Continuing Education program, so there are no prerequisites needed to begin the program. They are non-credit classes and will not count for college credit.

? Can I take just some of the classes but not all of them?

Yes. You may take any of the courses you like, or take all the required courses to receive a Certificate of Completion.

? Do these courses transfer for college credit?

No. This is a Certificate program, not a Degree program, so classes do not transfer for college credit.

? Is the program more for the hobbyist of actual job training?

Our program is comprehensive and introduces/prepares students for entry level positions in the Interior Design industry. However, these classes alone will not qualify to sit for the NCIDQ examination and/or use the title "Registered Interior Designer" in Texas. Texas Licensing of Interior Designers requires a specific educational program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Please visit their website for full details.

The title "registered interior designer" is a regulated term. Only those individuals who have become registered with the state of Texas as an interior designer may legally call themselves a registered interior designer.

Becoming a registered interior designer is voluntary and allows for signing off on permitting in code-impacted environments. Texas has a title act, meaning that the state does not regulate the practice of interior design, only the title of "registered interior designer." Those who do not wish to register can still use the term "interior designer." Non-registered designers, who can't sign off on permits, have to work with an architect to have the plans stamped and/or sealed, or approved.

? Do I need to purchase any materials or textbooks?

Some of our courses do require textbooks and supplies. Class syllabus are distributed to students on the first day of class that includes this information. An approximate cost estimate is $75.

? How much do the classes cost?

Classes range in price from $160.00 - $295.00 per class.

To view pricing information for each class, click on the class of interest from the above course list, which will open a second page listing all active courses for that particular semester. Click on the synonym number of your desired course section for detailed pricing information.

? How Do I Register?

Our program is Continuing Education (non-credit). No application is required. Student's may register anytime before the start date of class.

You can register online or contact the Continuing Education Registration office for assistance.
