Frequently Asked Questions

? How Do I Get a Professional Certification From PMI?

ACC's set of project management courses are designed to give you several entry points, depending on your experience level now. Then they should be taken sequentially to help prepare you for the certification exams. Normally, if you started with little to no project management exposure or experience, there would be a significant time gap between each course, as you accumulate experience hours and prepare to submit your application to the certifying organization (a non-trivial process!).

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? Is Applied Project Management Applicable To My Industry?

ACC Continuing Education's BMGT1009 Applied Project Management foundations course is taught using the full spectrum of generic principles from the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) from PMI (Project Management Institute). To explore the concepts more fully, we use a textbook with a variety of examples, cases, and explanations from several industries, including Information Technology (IT), Healthcare & biotech, business & finance, construction & renovation, oil & gas, education & training, engineering, aerospace, entertainment, government, non-profits, transportation, and others.

Most projects today are usually a mix of intellectual activities (e.g. computers and programming, websites, designs, inventions, research, etc.) and physical activities (e.g. facilities, prototype construction, equipment deployments, software installations, etc. Most people have little trouble understanding the examples and stories in our textbook and applying them to their own industry environments.

Remember that all PM courses anywhere will have to use examples and stories from some kind of domain to illustrate the principles.

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? I Already Have PM Experience. Why Take a Foundational Course Before Exam Prep?

No matter what your profession is, or college major, many of us become "accidental" project managers in our line of work through seniority, or just a lack of trained PM's in the organization.

In a class setting, especially with group course case projects, some students know as much as the prof in topic A, but next to nothing on topic B. Others in your workgroup may be experts at topic B, however, so you help each other fill in weak areas - this is the power of teamwork and diversity.

Approaching your certification education with organized education as a foundation will help fill in your checkerboard of background project management knowledge. And, if you lack experience hours in certain required areas, it will also help you be better positioned to take on work that would get you the needed experience in each knowledge area necessary to qualify for taking a professional certification exam.

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? What About Prerequisites?

There are no prerequisites for the introductory BMGT-1021 Intro to Managing Projects short course. The BMGT-1021 Intro to Managing Projects short course uses only a custom workbook distributed in class. In the short format, there is no time between class meetings to do much homework, so everything you need is covered during class time.

The prerequisites for the BMGT-1009 Applied Project Management foundation course are fairly liberal, since the general project management principles taught are applicable to a wide variety of projects. It is recommended that students at this course level have some familiarity with working on or leading a few projects, and/or gaining a basic understanding of the profession from an introductory course like BMGT-1021 Introduction to Managing Projects.

Recognize that projects don't exist in a vacuum; they have to occur in some domain (IT, finance, healthcare, construction, etc.). For BMGT-1009 Applied Project Management, a mix of domains is how the principles of project management are studied.

Project Management is mostly about management (the people skills), but the terminology used varies some within the different domains. However most people have at least seen the application of some project management principles in their workplace. See Is BMGT-1009 Applied Project Management Applicable To My Industry? for more information.

There are few requirements for the BMGT-1040 PMP/CAPM Exam Prep course, which is aimed at preparing students for either the PMP or CAPM levels of PMI's certification framework. However, it is recommended that students have 12-36 months working on projects, and/or a 35-40 hour basic foundational course in Project Management (e.g. BMGT-1009 Applied Project Management or comparable), to keep up with the fast pace of the exam preparation activities in this course.

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? What Costs / Tuition Are Associated With This Program?

Your total costs would include the published price of each course you take, and any ancillary fees (like ACC campus parking and insurance), plus any textbooks required. The latest edition texts for BMGT-1009 Applied PM, HITT-2026 Healthcare Implementation Project Management, and BMGT-1040 PMP/CAPM Exam Prep are usually widely available, from the ACC Bookstore.

Additional costs you may want to incur might include PMI® membership (which includes local chapter membership, and a free downloadable softcopy of the PMBOK® Guide, as well as many other standards and references), and maybe a paperback copy of the PMBOK® Guide (some people still like to have a reference book on their shelf).

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? Do I Get A Grade at Course Completion?

ACC's Project Management Program courses normally result in student performance ratings of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory (a.k.a. "Pass/Fail"). But instructors can provide you with a letter grade (A, B, C, D, etc.) if requested at the beginning of the course.

Successful course completion (per each course syllabus) earns a Certificate of Completion from ACC. For an online proof of completion, students can login to ACC Online Services and select "Current Students" where they can select Unofficial Transcript. Official Transcripts can be ordered from the college through the Admissions Transcripts web site.

For professional certifications (e.g. PMI®, CompTIA®, ITIL®, etc.), you have to qualify for and pass the exams of the certifying organization to receive that organization's certifying credential (PMP®, CAPM®, etc.) These professional exams are usually administered at a commercial testing center (e.g. ProMetric®) by invited appointment.

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? Should I Take Classes Online or On Campus?

ACC is one of the few places that offers the same foundation course BMGT-1009 Applied PM course both onsite and online. But the choice is a matter of a student's preferred learning style, and the student's availability. An onsite course requires an attendance commitment of typically two meetings per week at one of ACC's campuses. The instructor-led online course can be done asynchronously, in that there are no appointed times/days when you must be online or in a conference call, etc. Classwork completion can occur anytime during the unit week, when the student is able to get to it. Interaction is done via asynchronous media (e.g. email, discussion threads) or a phone call appointment if necessary.

In both the onsite and online intermediate course there is a course case lab exercise included to practice synthesizing the knowledge areas into practice for project Execution, as a group. This is rare for exam prep programs! The online version of BMGT-1009 Applied PM uses group team assignments to create project artifacts together - but it can sometimes be a challenge to collaborate with strangers in the online environment.

The program instructor, Bob Futrell, has gathered additional information on this topic which can be viewed here.

? How can I determine what Project Management starting point is best for me?

  • Students with little to no project background should start at the Intro individual short-course level, to be prepared for the 8-week intermediate level team-based course.

  • Students with some prior project background may know something about some of the above, so can start at the intermediate level to cover ALL of the above project management areas, filling in gaps in their background.

  • Students with significant project management background in many different life cycles can jump right to the 4-Saturday advanced level Exam Prep all-day course.

If you want a way to test yourself for readiness, try doing some of the (free) quizzes by our textbook author for the intermediate-level course, Kathy Schwalbe. Visit her textbook website (IntroPM.com), and do the EXTRA QUIZZES on the 7e Resources tab without any prior study (results go only to you). That should give some indication of how ready you are for professional certification exams. If you find too much unfamiliar vocabulary, then you should probably start at the beginning with the 2-day (or 4-evening) short course BMGT-1021 Introduction to Managing Projects.

What Our Students Are Saying

I have been volunteering as a PM for Leap to Success since early this summer, and they work specifically to engage developing PM's in the labor pool. Every two weeks when I report on my project, I have shared a lot of feedback about the training that I have received through various resources. Your classes are by far the greatest preparation I have found.

Robyn Greer

Diana, I was in Bob's October ADD course, which you taught several of the classes. I recently completed Hari's class and then took the PMP exam. I passed on the first try thanks to the excellent preparation from the classes... and a lot of studying!

Brian Crum

Hello Diana, I was in your fall ACC Applied Project Management class. I was to share with you that I am now a CAPM member. That you for your encouragement and insight.

Cyndie Jones

Just sharing the good news with you that I passed my PMP exam!

Thank you for all the help even before the class started. I'll definitely recommend your courses to anyone looking for training.

Bert Muhire

The Applied Project Management course is well organized and the course material takes a methodical approach to understanding the life cycle of a project. I use the concepts in my current job and this course provided me with the tools I can use effectively. Many thanks to Bob Futrell for an excellent class.

Poornima Rao

I just want to say thank you for teaching us the last few classes! It was great and I enjoyed your style of teaching. Also wanted to commend you on how you kept control of the class when dealing with a frustrated individual! It says alot, but I'm thankful for your leadership and all that I learned thru it! Thanks again

Derek Duprez

Thank you for making this PMI Certification possible. 6 months ago I enrolled at ACC with zero PM Knowledge. When I introduced myself, I said I would like to get certified by Summer 2022. You made it possible (i.e., class structure, materials, books, 1:1 zoom, etc). Especially professor Hari (I already thanked him in another email thread)! Thank YOU! I’ll be in touch within the next 3 years to obtain my PMP certification. Three weeks ago I started my very first PM entry role. Looking forward to learning, putting skills into practice, and hopefully not developing (many) bad habits.

Ana Gabriela Wong

Great class with lots of information and super knowledgeable instructors, all of you. It definitely required more time than I had budgeted but I enjoyed it. I don't believe I will take the exam prep course. I got all the info I needed by trying to keep up with the smart cookies on the team. They all have the soft skills to go far, that's for sure. I'll definitely recommend this course to others.

Kevin Willis

This was super challenging (as originally indicated) yet super fun and the best hands-on experience for an aspiring PM like myself! I spent 8 hours doing this, but I do not regret it! It was instructive, eye opening and realistic. I realized the depth of understanding that's really needed to be a good PM. Planning, leadership, team motivation, constant communication throughout execution, etc. all play a big role and are interdependent of each other. I know I went over budget and over-time, but I learned a lot. Truly! My favorite assignment thus far!

Ana Gabriela

I just successfully completed the Applied Project Management course. Each instructor had their own teaching style which I loved. Diana, Riz, and Bob make a wonderful team. I will definitely promote this program to everyone that I know.

Cynthia Martinez, M.ED

Obtaining the PMP credential had been a goal of mine for years. With the cost associated, education hours needed, and working for a small business I believed it unattainable. When my employer learned of the TWC Skills for Small Business Grant we both knew this was an opportunity too good to pass up.

Using the grant I was able to enroll in the ACC Project Management Continuing Education Program. I took three classes over two years all while working full time. Not only did the professors prepare me for the exam, they helped by giving me knowledge and skills I could immediately apply to my current projects. Obtaining this certification would not have happened without this grant or ACC. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to see where this will take my career.

Inda L Hahn

Diana Sawyers, PMP, CTCM, thank you for educating, coaching and being willing to share your knowledge. When I sit under your tutelage, my mind (1) reflects on past PM experiences and laugh at myself & what I didn't know and (2) races with process improvement ideas to implement now. All the instructors are equally wonderful and have a vested interest in our success.

Anita Janke

I took your PMP class last summer in Round Rock ACC Campus. Very excited to share the good news with you that I got my PMP certified last week, on my first attempt, with the above target score.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you and your team for the great lessons provided during the complete course. For sure I can tell that all the assignments were very helpful in giving a real time project management experience and out of all the simulation exercise was the best.

Vidya Nittala

This was a great class and I have told many of my colleagues at Dell that this class is worth taking if thinking about PMP certification.

Martha Hinostroza

I took your ITPM class in October of 2017. I thought often of the class while I was studying (for the certification exam), and I know it helped me! Thanks for a great class!

Katherine Burns

I just want to share with you that I passed the PMP exam today. It has been a long journey, but the hard work was worth all of it. I just want to thank you for your support and assistance.

Santos Arroyo

I took my PMP exam last month and passed with an "above target" score. Your class and the PMI PMP prep course were what made it possible for me to pass. Thank you!

Craig Bogan

I'm pleased to announce that I took the PMP exam for the first time yesterday and passed it! I want to thank you both for your knowledge and guidance. As a reminder, Bob I was in your Healthcare PM class in March and Hari I was in your PMP exam prep class this summer. I would definitely recommend the ACC program.

Carl Willmann

Thank you, Mr. Futrell! I found the class to be very well structured and informative. I have been spreading the word about how beneficial it was to take this class.

Vincent Escobar

CAPM Certification Complete - It goes without saying, that I'm starting off with a thank you to Hari, Bob, and all of the other instructors that I had through the ACC program. I'll be recommending your program and you will likely see me again for my eventual PMP Certification Prep.

Brian O'Connor

Thank you for an excellent IT Project Management course. I found it rewarding.

Mike Oberholzer

I appreciate the variety of expertise and teaching styles you each brought into the classroom - I learned a lot! I am already using some of the project management concepts and tools in my current position. My new skills make my job even more enjoyable, and my manager is delighted by my additional knowledge. I've been offered two new projects at work, so I can keep practicing what I've learned!
