Training the Speaking Voice

Course Description
This class is intended for anyone desiring to increase the power and impact of their speaking voice. Training in healthy vocal production is an essential part of speaking intentionally in any situation, from the stage or screen to the classroom or boardroom. In this course, you will learn a variety of techniques for preparing and utilizing your natural voice to speak confidently in a variety of environments. The first few classes will focus on active exercises designed to healthily engage the various aspects of vocal production, while the final sessions will practically apply what you have learned to scenes, speeches, interpersonal communication, or presentations.
Limited to 10 students.
Accents for Film & Stage

Course Description
This course introduces two important accents (used) for stage, film, television, and video games. In the fall we’re offering British and Russian. Spring will be German and Brooklynese. The Summer offers Southern and Irish. Through Knight-Thompson Speechwork, a new standard bearing approach to speech, students will acquire the skills to convincingly perform these accents. Areas of focus include developing the oral posture, learning how to create the unique pronunciations, and analyzing the “music” (rhythm, tempo, and intonation) of the accent. Studies include native speakers of these accents, and dialogue from stage and screen scripts will be utilized to apply the work. This course is for actors with and without speech training and for people who simply would enjoying learning two interesting accents.
Intermediate Arc Welding

Course Description
Introduction to MIG, TIG, and flux-cored welding processes. It is required that you complete WLDG-1000, or obtain instructor approval to take this course. Note: (CE) WLDG-1000 + (CE) WLDG-1043 = WLDG-1405 (4 Credits)
Note: Students are required to provide their own personal protective equipment (PPE) listed below.
- Safety Glasses (ANSI-approved with shatter-proof lenses and side shields)
- Reusable Earplugs (rubber or disposable sponge plugs)
- Flame Resistant Shirt/Welding Jacket (NFPA2112)
- Cotton Pants (must not have cuffs)
- Boots (high-top shoes are also acceptable, but fabric shoes are not permitted)
- Leather Gloves (gauntlet style to protect from embers and arc burns
- Welder's Cap (cloth cap with downward bill to protect from sparks)
- Locking pliers (for handling hot metal)
- Welding Hood (for electric arc welding, lens shade #10 or auto-darkening)

Conversational Italian I

Course Description
Taught by a native speaker, experience a new language and culture for travel and personal enrichment. Learn to communicate with basic conversations. This course will help students develop better listening to real conversations, practice in speaking, and focus on correct pronunciation. Course for beginners. No prerequisite. Creative Acrylic Painting Studio for Beginners

Course Description
In this introductory course, students will learn the fundamentals of using acrylic paint to produce various styles. Students will begin with monochromatic color schemes and progress to full color. Color mixing and various thicknesses of paint will be explored from thin washes to thick impasto techniques. A focus on composition, manipulation of space and capturing the likeness of objects will be studied. Students will become familiar with the materials and experiment with the flexibility of acrylic paint that can represent detailed traditional paintings as well as expressive, calligraphic, and translucent compositions.
Introduction to Computers: Computer Fundamentals
Course Description
The use of specialized software and use of adaptive hardware is included in this class. Vocational technology use includes keyboard use, data entry, and transcription accuracy. System and application software skills appropriate for each student are selected during the admissions interview. This course is geared toward supporting students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Horticultural Entomology
Program Area: Lifelong Learning
Course Description
An overview of insects and related organisms with an emphasis on destructive, predaceous, parasitic, and beneficial species. Topics include insect taxonomy, anatomy, morphology, physiology, and the application of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), mechanical, biological, and chemical control measures. Combined with credit HALT-1313.
