Course Description

This course is an overview of applicable regulatory standards and best practices related to aseptic technique in the education, training, and management of personnel in the sterile compounding environment. The course will provide an update of USP<797>; and related standards, as well as the policies and procedures for conducting ACPE accredited continuing education. This train-the-trainer course will educate and train pharmacists and technicians in requirements related to the sterile compounding environment, personnel training and conduct, environmental and personnel competency testing, regulatory compliance, and documentation. This course will provide the framework necessary for the learner to teach sterile compounding and aseptic technique (SCA) to pharmacists and technicians in a variety of practice settings, using the Austin Community College ACPE Accredited SCAT course, PHRA 1091. This course combines process validations (conducted via video), along with significant online/distance learning (DIL) coursework, and proctored, written examinations. The total estimated time required to complete this course is 48 clock hours (process validations combined with home-study). Course is generally completed over a 4-week period; however, the course must be completed within 6 months from the date of registration. CPE activity completers will receive a frame-able certificate of completion and upload of ACPE credit of (48 hours, 4.8 CEUs) into CPE monitor. This is a Practice-Based Activity. Prerequisites: Certified (PTCB) pharmacy technician and/or registered pharmacy technician (technicians practicing in states that do not require certification or registration will be considered on a case-by-case basis); or registered pharmacist or pharmacy intern. Completion of ACPE accredited IV certificate comprised of ≥ 40 hours (4.0 CEUs) for technicians or ≥ 20 hours (2.0 CEUs) for pharmacists, of which ≥ 50% of coursework consisted of direct sterile compounding experience. Preferred: Completion of ACC’s Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique (SCAT) course, PHRA 1091; ≥ two years of pharmacy experience and ≥ 1 year of direct sterile compounding experience. Course is restricted to registered, licensed, and/or certified pharmacists and technicians. Course is restricted to CE-only students who are petitioned into the course.
